Antikythira, an intriguing island, with Albinaria (Cerigana) cerigottana (O. Boettger, 1894) (Gastropoda: Eupulmonata: Clausilioidea) as a contrarian leftover species

Abstract

The remote Greek island Antikythira harbours a terrestrial molluscan fauna with 5 endemic species, 2 species in common with Crete only, and several more widespread species. Several species occurring in the Peloponnese are found on Kythira, but not on Antikythira. This made Boettger (1894) suggest that there is an important biogeographical boundary between Kythira and Antikythira. Only the endemic Antikythiran Albinaria (Cerigana) cerigottana does not support this. Since this species is not dealt with in recent monographs on Albinaria of both Crete and the Peloponnese, this problematic taxon is treated here in more detail.
